OUR COMMUNITY TODAY
East Somerville sets itself apart with its vibrant and welcoming spirit – seen everywhere in color,
sound, and flavor. Its streets and stores are alive with energy and commercial activity. As the
backdrop to this, East Somerville is settled between the banks of the Mystic River, the
Boston/Charlestown line, and on its western side, the McGrath Highway.
Its character is reflected in its diversity. Represented is a unique blend of commercial and
residential, a variety of foods and cultures, and a mix of English, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and
Creole that weaves through its streets and stores.
While the East Broadway business district with its mosaic of stores and services is East
Somerville’s historic commercial center, the area’s unique business dynamic is formed by a much
broader umbrella of establishments. This includes the Washington Street Commercial Corridor,
Inner Belt Industrial Park, Brickbottom Artist Community, Assembly Square Market Place, and a
variety of businesses distributed throughout.
