WHAT IS MAIN STREETS?

East Somerville Main Streets
Representing the oldest and most ethnically diverse neighborhood in Somerville, East Somerville Main Streets (ESMS) is a non-profit, public-private partnership between East Somerville residents, business owners, community leaders, the City of Somerville, and the National Main Streets Center. Drawing upon the neighborhood’s unique historical and cultural energies, ESMS is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to developing community initiatives and events that reflect and promote the true character of East Somerville as a vibrant place to live, visit, and do business.

The National Main Streets Model
East Somerville Main Streets follows a proven model. Founded in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Streets “Four-Point Approach” is a community-driven, comprehensive methodology used to revitalize traditional business districts in communities like East Somerville. Based on the work of community-led committees, it advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets.

Leadership:
East Somerville Main Streets is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors formed of interested citizens. Its daily operations are carried out by a full-time director.

Activity:
Most of East Somerville Main Streets’ events, activities, and dynamic nature come from its member led committees: Design, Promotion, Economic Support & Development, and Organization. Committees are always open to new members.
