"We would talk to 10 people and get 10 different answers ...
It's colorful, it's grey, it's funky, it's staid, there's nothing new, everything is changing, they love it, they hate it, they would only pass through, they would never leave.
And we realized that East Somerville, like our world itself, is whatever you say it is." - The Interpreting East Somerville Blog
Hoping to capture the diversity of the many varied interpretations of the neighborhood, in 2008 East Somerville Main Streets, with exhibit curator and East Somerville resident, Christopher Poteet, planned a photographic exhibition of East Somerville. Over 40 photographers, both amateur and professional, interpreted the essence of East Somerville. Entries were judged on originality, photographic quality, and how well the images captured a unique flavor of the neighborhood.
While outsiders may view East Somerville as a little rough around the edges, the exhibition worked to challenge that perception and instead to show the vibrancy, distinctiveness and unique character of our neighborhood. The pictures ranged from everyday life in the community, to historic buildings and expressive depictions of urban nature.
The congregation of St. Benedict's was featured, along with Tony behind the counter at Vinny’s Deli, a girls’ soccer team in Glen Park, footprints preserved in the sidewalks, and numerous other scenes; all the unique interpretation of many sets of eyes and the many different lives that occur in East Somerville. After an opening reception complete with food, friends and the unveiling of the photographs, "Interpreting East Somerville" was on display at Somerville City Hall for two months, inviting our neighbors to see and to experience a more complete vision of East Somerville.
